The Dojo Kun originated from Okinawan karate master Shungo “Tode” Sakagawa in the 18th century, though it is often credited to Gichin Funakoshi who adopted it for Shotokan Karate. Sakagawa based the rules on Chinese rules dating back to the era of Bodhidharma (the founder of Zen Buddhism), and they serve as a set of five guiding principles for martial arts training.
